The Faith Action Climate Team (FACT) presents its second annual conference, “Love at the Crossroads: Climate and Social Justice” on October 28 at Mount Zion Baptist Church. There will be three sets of workshops on issues that intersect with climate, exploring their effects on climate, climate change’s effects on them, and solutions to problems. Deborah Parker, Tulalip Tribes member, climate activist and women’s rights advocate, will deliver the keynote address.
Deborah Parker has served as a policy analyst and vice chair of the Tulalip Tribes. She is a board member of Our Revolution, the organization which came out of the Bernie Sanders campaign. She has been testified in Washington, D.C., on mental health issues, education reform and women’s rights. She also played an important role in the passage of the Violence Against Women Act. She recently spoke at the No Dakota Access Pipeline demonstration in Washington, D.C., and is passionate about climate Issues.
The conference will begin with an interfaith panel exploring the theme of the conference from Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Native and Buddhist perspectives. More than 20 workshops will be held, and conference participants may choose three workshops, one in the morning and two after lunch. Workshop topics include food, forestry, immigration, racial justice, transportation, health care, labor, ocean acidification, mental health, species preservation, and how to talk about climate change. (You only get to pick three workshops – yikes!)
The conference begins at 9 a.m. (check-in at 8:30) and ends at 5 p.m. Venue is Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1634 19th Ave., Seattle. The sliding-scale registration fee includes an organic, vegan lunch. The fee is as follows: $35 is the standard fee; $15 fee for low income attendees; participants with greater resources will be invited to register at the $50 level; and to sponsor another registrant at the $70 level. At the time of registration you will be asked to indicate your workshop choices. Workshop numbers are limited by the size of the room, so registering early assures your place in the workshops you prefer.
