Wonderful Cascadia Representation at 2018 Fremont Solstice Parade

Dozens of Cascadians from around the region were proud to represent Cascadia at the 30th annual 2018 Fremont Solstice Parade, located conveniently at the center of the universe in Seattle, Washington – Saturday June 17th.

Seattle CascadiaNow! presented a beautifully made Amanita Mushroom float, dozens of naked bicyclists painted up with the Doug joined the the thousands of painted nude cyclists, before convening for the solstice celebrations at Gasworks park.

The thousands of paraders, marching bands, floats, dance groups, and tens of thousands of onlookers enjoyed the blue skies and 77 degree weather.

This is the fourth year that Cascadia has been a part of the parade, an annual event produced each year by the Fremont Arts Council, which hosts other solstice and artistic events throughout the year.

The 2018 Fremont Solstice Parade is entirely grassroots, volunteer and donor supported, with only four rules:

  • ‘No written words, signage or recognizable logos;
  • No motorized vehicles (except wheelchairs);
  • No live animals (except guide animals); and
  • No functional weapons.

The Solstice Parade was founded in 1989 by Barbara Luecke and Peter Toms, and quickly grew to thousands of participants and tens of thousands of spectators. The 2018 Fremont Solstice Parade kicked off the Fremont Fair, which for many years was a benefit for Solid Ground (originally known as the Fremont Public Association). On January 29, 2010, Solid Ground announced that it is turning over ownership of the fair to the Fremont Chamber of Commerce.

The Fremont Arts Council (FAC), engages community to cultivate the spirit of celebration where everyone is an artist. The FAC believes that art helps build stronger communities and that Fremont is a state of mind, not a zip code. We welcome the participation of everyone regardless of who they are, or what they think or believe.  We celebrate the longest day of the year through profound street theater, public spectacle, and a kaleidoscope of joyous human expressions. The FAC also creates and cares for public art like the Fremont Troll, and engages everyone year-round in workshops and events including May Day, Luminata, Troll-o-ween, and Feast of the Winter Solstice.
